To evaluate the cooking capabilities of the Lodge Dutch Oven and the Our Table Dutch Oven, we conducted a cooking test by cooking Red Wine Braised Short Ribs. This test focused on three crucial parameters: Browning, Moisture Retention, and Final Flavor. These aspects are critical in determining the overall performance of a Dutch oven.
The Lodge Dutch Oven excelled in browning. The even heat distribution and exceptional heat retention allowed for consistent browning of the short ribs. It performed admirably, achieving that sought-after golden crust on the surface.
The Our Table Dutch Oven also performed well in browning. The even heat distribution provided a consistent sear, although it was slightly less intense compared to the Lodge. Nonetheless, the meat achieved a satisfactory browning.
The Lodge Dutch Oven demonstrated excellent moisture retention. Its tight-fitting lid and cast iron construction ensured that the natural juices and liquids were effectively trapped within the pot, which resulted in tender and succulent short ribs.
On the other hand, the Our Table Dutch Oven also displayed good moisture retention. While it didn’t match the Lodge’s level of moisture preservation, it still managed to keep dishes sufficiently moist and flavorful.
The Lodge Dutch Oven delivered a rich, deep flavor in our Red Wine Braised Short Ribs. The Dutch oven enhanced its flavors and made every bite enjoyable.
The Our Table Dutch Oven also produced vibrant and flavorful braised short ribs. Although there is a little difference in terms of tenderness, the dish still turned out pretty well.
How We Tested
We conducted a thorough cooking test using the classic Red Wine Braised Short Ribs to assess these Dutch ovens. We applied a consistent cooking method for both to ensure fairness.
The test started with evaluating their capacity to achieve the desirable sear on the meat. After that, I examined their moisture retention properties, which is significant in a meal requiring lengthy braising. Finally, we tasted and compared the depth and richness of flavors in the dishes.
The Lodge is an excellent choice for those who appreciate a classic and reliable Dutch oven that stands the test of time. But if you value versatility, modern aesthetics, and a budget-friendly option without compromising too much on performance, Our Table is a great option, too. While it may not match the Lodge in browning and moisture retention capabilities, it impresses with its own strengths.
